BB&T move leaves Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines ‘disappointed’ but he says more jobs will come in long run

Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines said Thursday he is “disappointed” that BB&T Corp. is moving its headquarters from Winston-Salem, but he is optimistic for the long-term results of the move. Joines called a news conference on the steps of City Hall to talk about the jolting news, which he learned about at 6:30 a.m. when BB&T President Chris Henson called him. Joines said he had no advance warning that the bank’s merger with Atlanta-based SunTrust or that the move to Charlotte was coming. “The fact that it was a merger of equals was emphasized,” Joines said, recounting what Henson told him. “One reason they are moving their corporate presence to Charlotte is that they could not have it in a location in Atlanta or Winston-Salem, so they had to pick a neutral location.”
