Hyundai production numbers down at Montgomery, Ala. plant, but SUV surging

Hyundai’s big bet on its Santa Fe SUV is paying off, judging by the newly released 2018 production numbers from the automaker’s Montgomery factory, as well as December sales figures. The plant produced more than 322,000 vehicles, including 88,000 SUVs, up 51 percent from the previous year, according to the Alabama Department of Commerce. In 2018, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama ceased producing the Santa Fe Sport and began producing the redesigned Santa Fe SUV. The factory produced 88,513 of the two models over the year, as well as 147,018 Elantras and 86,969 Sonatas last year. The factory’s overall production was down about 2 percent from 2017.
